Wedding dress alterations a disaster

I've recently had my wedding dress altered (hem taken up, straps altered), which looked fine in the shop, but now I've got it home and had more time to look at it and walk around in it, I've found that it's too long, the hem has been poorly taken up, the netting under the skirts has been taken up at the waist - which has created extra bulk on the hips (all she needed to do was cut it at the bottom).
Now I've only got 3 weeks to go until the big day and I'm forced to go to another dress maker.
Does anyone know where I stand legally with regards to getting a refund from the orginal dress maker (she charged me £65)? I have spoke to her on the phone and she made excuse after excuse. She's relunctantly agreed to see to me again to patch things up - but I'm very nervous about going back and so have decided to see another dress maker.

Have you tried going to someone like trading standards if its a shop or maybe if you had wedding insurance phone the insurance company and they will cover your outfit. Worth a shot hope it all works out.

Maybe you should try and take a picture of the dress before you take it to the other dress maker to show the damage that has been done.

Hope this helps

I cant believe this, the same thing has happened to me today, but different alterations problems. I will start my own thread for help, so that you dont loose people advising you and vice versa. I really hope yours gets fixed, and I will be sending you lots of hugs as I know how terrible it feels.
Good luck

Oh you poor things, I own a custom making dress company, and at least for their own reputation if things go wrong they should fix it. I think legally because you're getting a dress, good or bad they don't have to refund you. Ethically they should but before you go into paying someone to make your dress check out previous work they've done and ask people they've worked for what they're quality is like. Tecnically if you agreed something before hand with them you should have a case on the fact they haven't delivered. Hope you all work things out x x x
